Hang on and enjoy the ride!

By Jonathan Hacking

I went to bed, at the end of the day

Weighed down with the worries that had come my way

My consciousness slipped; let my eyelids collide

As I crossed over the border of the dream/wake divide.

All of a sudden gliding down a steep track,

A roller coaster ride with no one in back.

First a dodge, then a swerve,

Then an impossible curve.

“What happening!” I scream

Then I see it, my life,

Showing on a big screen.

As I go though the turns,

I see scenes of my life,

Its crashes and burns

Never truly alone,

Nor completely undone

My swerves,

And curves

Near death escapes,

Going through my life,

No stops or breaks.

Each curve, each thrill

Each nerve I kill

I realize is a trial.

Still…

I wonder at this odd ride

That shows my life on either side.

In answer comes as I pondering seek,

A soothing voice,

So soft and deep!

“My child I am the one who created the ride

This brief check is to see if you’ll make it safe inside”

You see with this ride

Comes a view of your life when seen from MY side

Each trial, each swerve,

Each death defying curve,

Are trials that too can be survived

If you just hang on and enjoy the ride.

The seatbelt and harness

Are commandments that do bless

If you will but use them to stay inside.

With the explanation clear,

The end came too near

And how I wished I could re-travel the ride

And yet with a start

I found the part

Of truth buried deep within.

Everyday I

A roller coaster try.

Onward an onward I fly

The curves may be steep,

And valleys are deep

If I but hang on

The journey’s not long

And I’ll truly enjoy the ride.

So when things get distressing

And worries are pressing

I reflect on the council

Received on the night of the ride

Remember my child,

The ride may be wild

But please hang on and enjoy the ride!

Angel days and nights

By Jonathan Hacking

It is three in the morning and the alarm goes off

I know it’s too early for work so I long to doze off

But the alarm refuses to die

Then I recognize the alarm, it is actually my daughter’s cry

As grumpy as a bear woken from hibernation

Thoroughly annoyed at this irritation

I get out of bed to take care of my crying child

She is so innocent and helpless

But in spite of this my temper is wild.

I calm myself down, remembering I still love my little girl child

Here she is,

The thief of my bed

Forcing me to snuggle her back to sleep on the couch instead

She slumbers, and sleeps

Tosses, and turns,

Screams and cries in sleepy alarms

Her arms fly wide while struggling to escape the confines of my arms

Out she rolls

Gently onto the floor

Confined by my restricting arms no more

Wakeful now,

The siren resumes,

And travels all the way to my bedroom

Mommy is sought.

Mommy is found.

Daddy (that’s me) gets now to sleep on the ground

While little angel dear,

Sleeps in my bed,

with her big brother and mommy so near

Morning comes and I make a stealthy escape

Get dressed, do the dishes, sweep the floor,

Make breakfast and lunch

Grab something to munch

Then take out the garbage out swiftly or I’m going to be late.

I dash to work,

Work hard all day

And finally come home to a pair of angels who now want to play.

They see daddy and squeal with delight

Completely forgetting the troubles of last night.

They look at me,

I start to grin

With cute smiles of their own they easily win

I put my things down and then pick them up

I may be tired,

But that’s all right

Eventually, one day they’ll both sleep through the night!
